William Paddock (1871-1925)
My grandfather was born in Bristol in 1871 but was brought up in Scotland. At the age of 20 he became Senior Art Master at Glasgow High School. In 1905 he was invited to become Senior Art Master at University College School, London, a position he held until his untimely death in 1925.
William exhibited in Edinburgh and London, twice at the Royal Academy. He loved open-air landscape painting, especially around the village of Bledlow, Buckinghamshire, where the family had friends.
He was an admirer of Velasquez and also Whistler, with whom he corresponded.
